The Client & Brief

The brand’s founder, Shaan Lalwani, approached Bokaap Design to transform her idea into a brand. Our task was to build the entire brand identity, including the name, logo, and product packaging. The goal was to create a brand that:

  • Evokes feelings of calm, cleanliness, and freshness
  • Reflects nature and the ocean
  • Stands out as a non-toxic, eco-friendly, and biodegradable product in a competitive market

The Origin Story

The concept for Coco Custo was born 30 metres underwater, inspired by Shaan’s experience diving off the coast of a tropical island, surrounded by vibrant coral and marine life. A comment from her diving instructor about how cleaning product runoff damages coral reefs resonated deeply with her. This prompted her to quit her job, adopt a sustainable lifestyle, and focus on creating eco-friendly cleaning products, starting with a natural laundry detergent.

Shaan’s personal journey and dedication to marine conservation shaped the entire project, infusing the brand with a distinct personality that stands out as a fresh and conscious entrant in the market.

Brand Name & Logo

During the naming process, we conducted several workshops with Shaan to refine the brand’s core attributes. Our brainstorming and market research led us to a name that embodied purity and freshness. As the brand was conceived in the ocean, it was essential to pay tribute to its marine origins while emphasizing its eco-friendly nature.

The result was “Coco Custo.”

  • “Coco” represents coconut, the detergent’s key natural ingredient, signaling the brand’s commitment to sustainability.
  • “Custo” is a nod to Jacques Cousteau, the renowned marine conservationist, highlighting the brand’s connection to the ocean.

As we developed the name, we also explored visual elements for the logo. Given Coco Custo’s mission to protect marine life, we incorporated a wave and a coconut tree into the letter “C,” using negative space to subtly reference the brand’s oceanic roots.

The Packaging

For the packaging, we developed a cohesive brand style, using different shades of a single colour to distinguish each product while keeping a consistent illustration style.

We opted for a flat illustration style, avoiding 3D elements to ensure a clean and modern look. The challenge was to create depth and continuity across the label without repeating elements. We achieved this by incorporating underwater hills, coral, and small marine life, reinforcing the eco-friendly message without overpowering the design.
